Archaeological Museum Sandanski



Archaeological Museum – Sandanski was founded in 1936 and is one of the five archaeological museums in Bulgaria, specialized in the field of ancient archaeology. It is situated over the foundations of St. John’s basillica. Inside, there is a unique collection of Roman marble gravestones (I-III c.) – the biggest in Bulgaria, rarely seen in Europe and typical only for this region. It was gathered for a period of 80 years from all the settlements in the municipality. Real masterpieces of ancient art are the tablets of Julius Maximum, of Asclepius, the endowment tablet of Flaviana Filokratia and others. The collection has also various votive tablets – of Artemis, Aphrodite, Zeus, Tyche, the local deity Teos Selenos and others, as well as statue replicas of Aphrodite and Tyche – the pride of any museum. Archaelogical museum – Sandanski possesses a collection of mosaics from the early Christian Period (ІV-VІ c.) with an area of 350 sq. m. It includes 11 367 museum exhibits.
