Bishop’s Basilica – Sandanski



Archaeological and cultural monument from Antiquity of National Importance. The most representative and monumental building found until now in the ancient city from the period V – VI c. It is a typical classical Hellenistic basilica with shortened axis divided into three naves, the supposed size of the axes are 22/23 m with orientation east-west. It has also atrium (an inside yard), narthex, there is a well preserved pulpit, altar and sintron with three rows of seats in the naos. The complex includes a baptistery which in form and size is the only one in Bulgaria. Magnificent floor mosaics in the styles “opus tesalatum” and “opus sektile” have been found, as well as gorgeous inside architecture with Roman columns in Roman-Corinthian style and a unique marble altar wall with scenes from the Gospel.
